Helen Nolan (Dougnora)
Helen Nolan, 97, of West Hartford, died Tuesday, November 19, 2013, she was the wife of the late
Valmore Nolan of New Bedford, MA. Born on December 1, 1915 in Waterbury, she was the
daughter of Paul and Anna Dougnora who emigrated from Lithuania. She was educated there at St.
Joseph School by the French Daughters of the Holy Spirit, and grew up to be a devout Roman
Catholic, Child of God. Married in 1942, she moved to East Hartford with her husband Val after the
war. In 1952 they moved into their first and only home in West Hartford, where she was a resident
for over 50 years. Helen worked for the Wiremold Company for 12 years before receiving employment
at the State of Connecticut, comptroller’s Office. She retired at the age of 72 and liked to spend
her time caring for her home and family, with an occasion trip to the Hartford fronton. She was
a member of the Elmwood Senior Center and enjoyed cooking and sewing. Helen was a member of St.
Brigid Church, Elmwood, where she never missed a Sunday Mass. Her advice for her children, was
to get a good education, always do the right thing, and give thanks and praise to God for all
your blessings. She is survived by her three sons, Richard Nolan of West Hartford, Robert Nolan
of Hartford, and Kenneth Nolan of Morris. Friends and family may call at the Sheehan Hilborn Breen
Funeral Home on Thursday from 6 to 8 pm. A Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday,
November 22, at 10 am, at St. Patrick-St. Anthony Church, 285 Church St., Hartford. Burial will be in
Calvary Cemetery, Waterbury.
