Obituary for Elvira Laureano (Santos)

Elvira Laureano (Santos)
Elvira Laureano(1926 - 2017)
West Hartford, CT

July 15, 2017
Hartford lost a prime example of the “American dream” today. Elvira Laureano of West Hartford, was born into poverty in Mira de Aire, Portugal on an autumn day in 1926. In 1960, with her husband and 4 year old daughter, she crossed an ocean in search of a better life. She got it. In this—the land of opportunity—Mrs. Laureano labored arduously. When St. Frances Hospital was a small place, she worked in the laundry room guaranteeing clean linens for the sick. The bulk of her employ was with Crouse-Hinds, Arrow Hart on the assembly line. Her contributions helped aircraft to fly. On the weekends, she helped launch the first Portuguese catering business in Greater Hartford. Marriage to José Laureano lasted 47 years. Their 7 day work-week enabled them to move to a good school district. They sent two, first-generation children to college and far beyond. Elvira survived 2 bouts of childbirth, 11 presidents, 8 U.S. recessions and a life of hard work and happiness. One of her greatest pleasures was feeding people. Her delicious cooking satisfied countless individuals. “Silent Night” was her favorite song. Moving forward, her nights will be forever silent. Your thoughts and prayers are most welcome. She lives on through a tireless daughter and son-in-law, Estela and Lew Merrow of Vernon; her son Paul and daughter-in-law Eileen Laureano of Malverne, NY, and her three grandchildren Jennifer, Christopher and (little) Estela. Great-grandchildren Anna and Lew Evans receive a legacy in the form of lessons and culture passed down. Her wake will be a bitter-sweet ending to a full and generous life. It takes place at Sheehan Hilborn Breen Funeral Home, 1084 New Britain Ave., West Hartford on Tuesday, July 18, from 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm. Our Lady of Fatima Church will host the funeral service on Wednesday, July 19, 10;00 am with a Mass of Christian Burial. She was a devout parishioner there for 56 years. Elvira will join her husband, José at Cedar Hill Cemetery. Memorial funds will be donated to The Masonic Charity Foundation of Connecticut.
Adeus, mãe. Nós vamos sentir sua falta para sempre.
