Obituary for George A. McClay

George A. McClay
George McClay passed away very peacefully on October 6, 2017. He was born on March 30, 1946 to the late Lucy (Palin) and Clarence (Brub) McClay. He grew up in New Britain, CT with numerous cousins and friends, playing sports in the parks and at the Boys Club. In 1967 he met his future wife, Maureen Kelly McClay, and after they married in 1968 they spent their lives in West Hartford, CT where they raised their family. George was very involved with the community, the church and the schools. He worked for 10 years for Black & Decker and then 24 years for Berendsen Fluid Power (formerly PowerDraulics Nielsen, Inc.) His true calling, however, was coaching basketball. He coached for 35 years – 30 years for St. Brigid School, WH. He was the head coach of the boys’ team and eventually the girls’ team, too. He also coached softball for 10 years. He had a special connection with all his players and always remembered every single one. He was a certified basketball referee for almost 30 years, first with the CBCBO, Board 4, and then for 15 years with IAABO Board 6. Basketball was his passion but he also loved car racing, the Red Sox, the Patriots, and, of course the Celtics. He adored raising a pint of Guinness, especially in the pubs in Ireland. George was a mainstay in the community and presided over an early morning coffee group at Starbucks in the Center with great friends and companions. His family will forever be grateful for his caring, loving, unconditional support. He was a role model, a fun guy and a truly good man. He leaves a true legacy - as Coach and George to all his players and friends; as Bompy to his grandchildren, Janelle, Tristan, Clara and Patrick; and, as Dad to his children: sons Kevin McClay and his wife, Claire of Clontarf, Ireland; Brenden McClay and Anne of West Hartford and, his daughter, Kaireen McClay of West Hartford. Finally, he leaves his wife,
best friend and soul mate, Maureen.
Funeral procession will be Tuesday, 10:00 am from the Sheehan Hilborn Breen Funeral Home, 1084 New Britain Ave., West Hartford, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial, 10:30 am at St. Brigid Church, West Hartford.
