It is with much sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Maria Tavares (94) of Hartford, on January 24, 2018. She was born on January 1, 1924 in Vale Maior, Albergaria-A-Velha, Portugal and immigrated to the United States in 1961. Maria was predeceased by her husband, Arnaldo Tavares, and her siblings both in Portugal and Brazil.
She is survived by her son, Fernando Tavares and daughter-in-law, Lucinda of Wethersfield; her daughter, Maria Fernanda Calado and her son-in-law, Jose Eduardo Calado of Newington. She is lovingly remembered by her six grandchildren, Teresa Schwarzhaupt (Robert) of Avon, Daniel Tavares of Natick, MA, Yvette Tavares of Wethersfield, James Tavares (Renee) of Wethersfield, Rui Calado (Bethany) of Newington, and Sabrina Perzan (Greg) of Newington. She was blessed to have time with her eight great-grandchildren, Jacob Schwarzhaupt, Samuel Schwarzhaupt, Matthew Tavares, Jeffrey Tavares, Wyatt Tavares, Charlotte Tavares, Makenzie Calado and Maya Perzan. Additionally, she leaves numerous nieces and nephews both in the United States and Brazil.
Maria was employed for many years by Arrow-Hart and Hegeman (Cooper Industries) in Hartford. Maria was a communicant of Our Lady of Fatima Church in Hartford. Maria’s family would like to thank the staff of Bel-Air Manor in Newington, especially Jessica, her CNA, for their compassion and care throughout her stay.
Funeral procession will be Saturday,(January 27), 9:00 am from the Sheehan Hilborn Breen Funeral Home, 1084 New Britain Ave., West Hartford, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial, 10:00 am at Our Lady of Fatima Church, Hartford.
