Obituary for Mary A. Schaub (Yakubisin)

Mary A. Schaub of West Hartford, CT, passed away peacefully at home at the age of 94, Wednesday, February 14, 2018, with John T. Schaub, her husband of 67 years, and her devoted daughter, Mary Ellen Allen, by her side. Mary was born in Aultman, PA, daughter of the late Matthew and Anna Yakubisin. She grew up in Bridgeport, CT and graduated from Bassick High School in 1941. As a young adult she worked for the war effort at Bridgeport Brass where she developed many life-long friendships like the “Chit Chat Girls of the East End.” After her marriage to John they settled and lovingly raised their family in Trumbull, CT, then relocated to West Hartford, residing there for the past 40 years. Prior to retirement, Mary was a sales associate in the Children’s Department at G. Fox, retiring in 1989.
Over the years she was an avid and accomplished bowler, extraordinary cook (everyone enjoyed her homemade Hungarian meals and cookies) and was also well-known for being the “life of the party.” Mary especially liked traveling to her husband John’s annual Naval Reunions and socializing with his shipmates and their spouses. She enjoyed visiting area casinos and was a sports enthusiast who rooted for the Boston Red Sox and UCONN Women’s Basketball. Mary had a wonderful life and left us with many wonderful memories.
Mary is survived by her husband John, her daughter Mary Ellen Allen and her husband Damon of Southington, CT; three grandchildren, several in-laws, nieces and nephews and a large extended family by way of her daughter’s marriage to Damon. She is pre-deceased by her son William J. Schaub and her siblings Adam, Helen and Steven.
The family would like to offer their heartfelt thanks to her special neighbors Pat, Dot, John and Jan, who always seemed to provide a helpful hand at just the right time. They would also like to thank Dr. Rolf Knoll and his colleagues at Prime Healthcare, PC for their extra-special attention and compassion over the years as the family physician. We are also very grateful to her caregiver, Deb Richardson, whose kindness and care was a true blessing.
To honor Mary’s wishes, there will be no calling hours and services will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Mary’s favorite charity St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis TN 38105 or a charity of choice. Mary will be missed, but not forgotten by all who knew her. If you wish to celebrate her life, please do so with a “Random Act of Kindness” of your choosing.
