Obituary for Joan Maxwell (Stiquel)

Joan Maxwell (Stiquel)
Joan Maxwell, 92, of West Hartford and Niantic, passed away peacefully on April 10th surrounded by her family. She was born in Hartford to Edward and Elizabeth Stiquel. She was married to Claude Maxwell, who predeceased her in 1980.
Joan was a graduate of Pace University. After college, she worked at the American Red Cross and Saint Francis Hospital as a phlebotomist and laboratory technician. After leaving St. Francis Hospital, she worked for the State of Connecticut as a Laboratory Inspector for 27 years before her retirement.
Joan loved the beach and spent summers with her family at her beloved cottage at Black Point Beach for over forty years. She was active in the Black Point Women’s Club, and was known around the beach for always riding her bicycle into her eighties. For over forty years, she was a member of the Nutmeggers Investment Club. Additionally, she enjoyed travelling with friends and spending time with her dog. In later years, her grandsons held a special place in her heart.
She is survived by her son, Edward Maxwell of Wethersfield, her daughter and son-in-law, Claudia Maxwell and Michael Potts, grandsons Maxwell and Gavin Potts of West Hartford, and a cousin who she considered a second daughter, Melanie Martin of New Milford. Additionally, she leaves behind her primary caregiver for more than three years, Douris Channer.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, April 17th, 10 a.m. at St. Patrick-St. Anthony Church, 285 Church Street, Hartford, followed by a reception at the Franciscan Center for Urban Ministry adjoining the church. Parking is available at the lot across from the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Town that Cares, West Hartford Social Services, 50 South Main Street, Room 306, West Hartford, CT 06107. Online condolences may be made at
