Obituary for Maria C. Vieira (DaCosta)

Maria C. Vieira,88, formerly of West Hartford, beloved wife of the late Joao Vieira, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 10, 2018 at Hartford Hospital after a courageous battle with a brief illness.

Maria was born in Castanheira, Portugal on March 1, 1930 to the late Domingos and Teresa (Afonso) DaCosta. She immigrated to the United States in 1960 and was employed with Aetna Life & Casualty Company for 27 years until her retirement in 1987.

Maria will always be remembered for her warm smile, caring, and thoughtful ways of helping others. She cherished her faith and was a devoted member of St. Helena’s Church in West Hartford. She enjoyed cooking and gardening, but most of all, she cherished the company of her family and friends.

She will be dearly missed by her son and daughter-in-law, Joseph and Rita Vieira of Newington, grandsons, John Vieira and his wife Michelle of Southington, Michael Vieira and his fiancé Ali Deni of Rocky Hill, and her adored and cherished great granddaughter Carly Vieira of Southington. She also leaves four sisters, Teresa Santos of Canada, Rosa Rua of Portugal, Anna Rodrigues and Joaquina Louis of France, and three brothers, Jose DaCosta of Canada, and Mario and Alvelino DaCosta of Portugal. She also leaves a special godson, Nelson Santos of Naperville, Illinois and many nieces and nephews. Maria was predeceased by two brothers, Domingos and Joao DaCosta of Portugal.

Her family would like to thank the ICU and the doctors, nurses, nurse’s assistants, and palliative and hospice care at Hartford Hospital for the wonderful care given to her over the past 5 plus weeks. They would also like to thank the entire staff at Jefferson House in Newington for the compassionate care they gave her for over 3 ½ years.

Family and friends may call on Sunday, May 20, 2018 at Sheehan-Hilborn-Breen Funeral Home, 1084 New Britain Avenue, West Hartford from 3:00-6:00 p.m.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, May 21, 2018 at 9:00 a.m. at Sheehan-Hilborn-Breen Funeral Home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. at St. Helena’s Church, 30 Echo Lane, West Hartford. She will be lovingly laid to rest in West Meadow Cemetery, Newington.
